Why do we harrass our politicians over their sexual behaviour? It is not as if we in Britain or the USA led generally blameless lives in this respect. Regardless of my feelings about sexual infidelity, I think we should judge our politicians on their politics. If anyone has the ‘right’ to criticise others over their sexual behaviour, it might be someone who has led a blameless life. Such a person might be inclined to be forgiving as Christ taught, ‘Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.’. If it came down to such a choice, I would prefer a sexually immoral but competent minister of state to a sexually pure but naive individual. Would JF Kennedy have performed as well during the Cuban missile crisis if he had been being chased day after day over his affairs during that time, as his successor Bill Clinton was years later? Weren’t we all better off not knowing? Might Clinton have done a better job watching Al Quada if he hadn’t had to spend so much time and energy fighting sexual allegations that we really did not need to know about?
